Michelle Shegda is education director of the Boys & Girls Club, which provides homework help and after-school tutoring

The Boys & Girls Club of Venice appointed Venice resident Michelle Shegda as its education director earlier this year.

Under the direction of Shegda, a Pennsylvania native, the Boys & Girls Club of Venice provides after-school homework help and tutoring for club members, as well as a variety of character and leadership development programs.

Trainer offering beach workouts with all donations benefiting Boys & Girls Club

To help combat childhood obesity and benefit fitness, nutrition and environmental health programs at the Boys & Girls Club of Venice, local personal trainer Crystal Quintana has created The Boys and Girls Movement: Fundraiser to End Childhood Obesity.

Quintana will hold a six-week core fusion (core-functional, yoga, Pilates) beach workout series, with all profits going to the Boys & Girls Club.

Venice Boys & Girls Club gets $41,000 support grant from LA84 Foundation

It was announced Wednesday, June 6th, that the Boys & Girls Club of Venice would receive a grant for $41,000 from the LA84 Foundation, formerly known as the Amateur Athletic Foundation. The grant will serve to support the sports, fitness and recreation program at the club.

Current competitive programs under the Play Now initiative include basketball, soccer, flag football and sailing. Intramural recreation programs include volleyball, basketball, baseball, soccer and sailing.

Nancy and David Iben honored by Venice Boys & Girls Club

Nancy and David Iben have been longtime supporters of the Boys & Girls Club of Venice.

David is a member of the board of directors, and is currently the treasurer. Nancy's involvement has come through her career work as a counselor and her passion for helping children. She originally worked for the club as a counselor and helped establish the current counseling program.

The three R's - Reading, (W)riting and (A)rithmatic -are the staples of education. The aptitude of a child is based on how well he or she does in these subjects.

Greatly overlooked, especially now, are the arts - for it's in this field of education where students who may not necessarily excel in the core courses can find expression, blossom and be directed to the future
